Every project begins with a story. Ours began long before Munay had a name.
Munay is a newly founded social enterprise based in Huanchaco, a small coastal town in northern Peru. Through the creation of handmade textile products, we aim to generate fair economic opportunities for local women while preserving the rich textile traditions that have been passed down through generations.
How It All Started
Munay was born from FairMail, a social enterprise that has been working in Huanchaco for many years, creating educational and economic opportunities for young people through photography. During our work with FairMail, we had the privilege of building strong relationships within the local community and listening to the stories of the people who live here.
Over time, one reality became increasingly clear: women face significant barriers to achieving financial independence.
Many women in Huanchaco carry the primary responsibility for raising children, managing households, and caring for family members. At the same time, access to stable and fairly paid employment is often limited. While many possess incredible artistic and textile skills, they frequently lack access to training, resources, and markets where they can sell their work.
We knew we wanted to do something about it.
In 2024, inspired by the Quechua concept of Munay—a word that can be translated as love, beauty, and the will to create positive change—we founded Munay.
Our Mission
At the heart of Munay is a simple belief: talented women deserve opportunities to thrive.
Our mission is built around three interconnected goals.
First, we want to create sustainable economic opportunities through the production and sale of handmade textile products. Every item is crafted by local artisans and represents a source of income that supports women and their families.
Second, we aim to build a supportive community where women can learn, collaborate, share experiences, and grow together. We believe empowerment is not only about income—it is also about confidence, belonging, and mutual support.
Third, we are committed to preserving and celebrating Peru’s extraordinary textile heritage. Traditional techniques, knowledge, and craftsmanship are invaluable cultural treasures, and we want to help ensure they continue to be practiced and appreciated by future generations.
Huanchaco is our Home
Huanchaco, is known for its beautiful coastline, its traditional fishing culture, and its vibrant community. Yet behind this beauty, many families face economic challenges and limited employment opportunities.
Women are often among the most vulnerable members of the community. Informal work is common, and balancing family responsibilities with income generation can be extremely difficult.
At the same time, Huanchaco is home to remarkable creativity. Many women have inherited textile knowledge from previous generations and possess skills that deserve recognition and support.
Munay exists at the intersection of these challenges and opportunities.
By providing materials, training, mentorship, and access to wider markets, we aim to help transform traditional craftsmanship into sustainable livelihoods. Our long-term vision is not simply to create products, but to support women in developing the skills and confidence needed to eventually lead and manage the enterprise themselves.
