A photograph can capture a moment, tell a story, or reveal a different perspective. At FairMail, it can also create opportunities, build confidence, and change lives.
Since 2006, FairMail has been working with young people from vulnerable backgrounds, using photography as a tool for personal growth, education, and economic empowerment. What began as a simple idea—that young people should be fairly rewarded for their creativity—has grown into a social enterprise that combines photography, fair trade principles, and social impact.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower teenagers from disadvantaged communities in Huanchacho and Trujillo, Peru, by providing photography training, mentorship, and access to international markets. Through this process, they develop valuable skills, gain self-confidence, and earn an income from their creative work.
We do not see young people as beneficiaries, but as talented photographers, storytellers, and changemakers with unique perspectives to share.
Photography as a Tool for Empowerment
When young people begin photographing their surroundings, they learn to observe the world differently. They discover that their experiences matter and that their stories are worth telling. Photography encourages creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression—skills that extend far beyond the camera.
Seeing their images transformed into products sold around the world gives young photographers a powerful sense of achievement. They realize that their work has value, that their voice can be heard, and that they are capable of creating opportunities for themselves.
This process helps build confidence, independence, and a stronger belief in their own potential.
The Communities We Work In
FairMail works in communities where young people often face significant social and economic challenges. Limited access to quality education, unstable family situations, and financial hardship can make it difficult for teenagers to imagine different possibilities for their future.
Yet these communities are also rich in creativity, resilience, and talent.
Our role is to create opportunities where those talents can flourish. Through long-term support, training, and guidance, we help young people develop both personally and professionally, opening doors that may otherwise remain closed.
Our Products
The photographs created by FairMail photographers are transformed into a range of fair trade products, including greeting cards, postcards, calendars, and other photo-based gifts.
Each product tells a story—not only through the image itself, but also through the young photographer behind it. Customers are invited to connect with the people who created the photographs and to become part of a model that values creativity, dignity, and fair compensation.
Every purchase directly supports the photographers and contributes to the continuation of the program.
Creating Lasting Impact
Our teenagers join the program when they are 14 or 14 years old and they leave when they are 19. Over the years, the photographers gaine access to education, developed professional skills, and discovered new possibilities for their future. Many continue their studies, found meaningful employment, or pursued careers in creative fields.
Perhaps even more importantly, they gaine something that cannot easily be measured: confidence in themselves and their abilities.
When a young person realizes that their work is appreciated by people across the world, it changes the way they see themselves. It expands what they believe is possible.
Through photography, we help young people tell their stories. In doing so, they begin to write new chapters for their own lives.
